Discovering Your Inner Self: Morrnah Simeona’s Legacy and the Evolution of Ho’oponopono

Welcome to the world of Ho’oponopono, an ancient Hawaiian practice of self-discovery and healing! If you first learned about it through Dr. Joe Vitale, you’re not alone. Today, we’ll explore the contributions of Morrnah Nalamaku Simeona, a renowned kahuna lapa’au (healer), and her connection to the Ho’oponopono discipline.

Morrnah Simeona updated the traditional practice of Ho’oponopono, teaching it throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe. Although there were older traditions, her version focused on the belief that there’s no external or internal world, but rather everything is part of a divine interconnectedness.

Her teachings included these key elements:

  • Ke Akua I’o (Divine Creativity)
  • Amakua (The Superconscious)
  • Uhane (The Conscious Mind)
  • Unihipili (The Subconscious Mind)
  • Ke Akua I’o, or Divinity, is both the substance of the other parts and what separates them. It comes from a void, zero, or nothing, and permeates all things.

Morrnah’s work built upon the knowledge of other kahuna lapa’au who understood the connection between individuals. For example, Aunty Mahilani Poepoe’s grandfather, also a kahuna lapa’au, prayed for forgiveness for his part in a conflict with someone who had disliked him. This is similar to the process taught by Morrnah in her workshops.

Morrnah’s version of Ho’oponopono has been continued and expanded by various individuals:

Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len, a trained psychologist, worked with Morrnah and applied her teachings in his work at Hawaii State Hospital.
Kamaile Rafaelovich, who learned Ho’oponopono from Morrnah in 1969, collaborated with Dr. Hew Len on several projects.
Dr. Joe Vitale, known for his work on The Law of Attraction, hosted workshops led by Dr. Hew Len, although some conservative Hawaiians believed he was spreading the message too wide.
Mabel Katz, a student of Dr. Hew Len, has gained a huge following, particularly among Spanish-speaking communities.

Morrnah Simeona’s contributions to Ho’oponopono have left a lasting impact on the practice, influencing the teachings of various notable figures. Her legacy invites us all to embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing, embracing the interconnectedness of all and the power of forgiveness.
